Elm Street Park Playground
Final Design Plans
Montgomery Parks has published the final designs for playground renovations in Elm Street Park. This renovation will be done in coordination with the Capital Crescent Surface Trail project, which includes constructing a new trail along 47th Street and through the northern end of Elm Street Park where it will connect to the Purple Line trail. Construction of the trail and associated retaining walls is expected to begin this fall, with playground construction beginning next year and completed by the fall of 2026.
The playground renovation includes three separate areas: one for kids ages 2-5, one for kids ages 2-12, and a fitness area for ages 13 and older, with trees between the play areas. Other improvements include accessibility ramps, trees, utility upgrades, stormwater management, walls, and fencing. The promenade will be upgraded with new pavement and furnishings. Montgomery Parks incorporated public feedback, shared via public meetings and surveys, into the site design.
Elm Street Park is being designed in coordination with the future Bethesda Market Park, which is proposed to include amenities such as a stage, shade structure, flexible lawn space, amphitheater, water feature, small and large dog park, table games, multigenerational active zone, and a variety of seating options.
