June 12 Town Council Meeting

The next meeting of the Town Council will be held on Monday, June 12 at 7 p.m.  in the Town Hall and by Zoom video conference. View the agenda here.

Montgomery Parks Postpones June 14 Bethesda Market Park Community Meeting

Montgomery Parks has postponed the Bethesda Market Park virtual community meeting that was scheduled for June 14, 2023, while the partnership team continues to work on the concept plans and budget for the future park. The Town will notify residents when a new date for the virtual meeting is scheduled.

The Bethesda Market Park is being developed in downtown Bethesda, near the historic Women’s Cooperative Farm Market and Elm Street Urban Park. When completed, the project will repurpose two nearby parking lots and provide nearly four acres of urban green space in downtown Bethesda.

Bethesda Market Park is a public/private partnership between Montgomery Parks, the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, the Town of Chevy Chase, Wisconsin Columbia Venture LLC, and EYA, LLC.

More information on the Bethesda Market Park project is available here.

Red Light Signal to be Installed at East West Highway Crosswalk

The Town is pleased to report that the State Highway Administration (SHA) has agreed to install a red light signal at the crosswalk on East West Highway near Maple Avenue. This improved signalization responds to a long standing request of the Town to increase pedestrian safety along the corridor, including at this crosswalk since the opening of the Sleaford pedestrian underpass on the north side of East West Highway.

Planning for the improved signalization will proceed over the summer and fall, with final plans expected in late November. Construction would take place in the first half of 2024.  The Town will provide updates as plans progress.

Rosemary Triangle Improvement Proposal

At its May 10 meeting, the Town Council discussed the process of considering enhancements to Rosemary Triangle park, as proposed by the Town's Climate and Environment Committee. The Council noted that the Town is awaiting a certified topographical survey of the park and will distribute it publicly when received. The survey is available here.

At its May meeting, the Council also noted concerns expressed by some residents about the scope of the proposal and discussed the option of replanting with some native plants and placing a few benches adjacent to the perimeter sidewalk. The Council agreed to schedule and publicize a community “walkinar” of the park in the fall to review existing conditions and to solicit resident feedback on possible, limited enhancements. The Town arborist will inventory all plantings in the park prior to this event.

Town website

Town Launches Redesigned Website

We are pleased to announce that the Town recently launched a redesigned website. The functionality and interface of the site haven't changed so residents shouldn't have any issues navigating to their favorite pages. The redesign features photos of Town open spaces and residential properties that have been taken over the years.

We hope you enjoy using the new site, where you can register for Town programs, report service problems, and RSVP for Town events, and find it a refreshing update from the previous design.

Recycle

A Reminder About Recycling Plastics

This is a reminder that the Town's recycling contractor accepts and recycles all plastics #1 through #7 that it receives from Town residents. The plastics are separated, baled, sold, and recycled, as follows

-- #1 Plastics: PET (water bottles and soda bottles)

-- #2 Plastics: HDPE Natural & Colored (detergent bottles, milk jugs, butter tubs)

-- #3 - #7 Plastics: Mixed Plastics (clear food packaging containers, grocery bags, shampoo bottles, ketchup bottles, yogurt containers, medicine bottles)

The only items that our contractor does not want and does not have the ability to recycle are plastic clam shell containers (like those from a salad bar). Everything else is marketed, sold and recycled out of the single-stream recycling facility owned by our contractor.

A detailed single-stream recycling guide can be found here.
